Resident Supervisors



The Resident Supervisor (RS) is responsible for supervision of the Upward Bound students (approximately 330) and Resident Advisors (approximately 20) during a six-week summer component (June 5th - July 5th, 2019).  

Resident Supervisors are the backbone of our summer staff and work as the link between the Residence Hall Staff and the Administrative Staff.  The program typically employs three female and two male RSs who live in the residence halls and are supervised by UB Administrative Staff.  

Although the students are here for six weeks, the RSs are employed for eight weeks.  Work begins on Monday, May 20th, 2019 to prepare for the arrival of the Resident Advisors (RAs) and students.  In addition, there will be a mandatory summer staff orientation on the evening of April 30, 2019.
 
Minimum Requirements for Position
  1. Successful completion of a 4-year college degree by May 20th, 2019.
  2. GPA of 2.5 or higher preferred.
  3. Ability to commit 100% time and effort to Upward Bound during the summer program (May 20 - July 5, 2019). 
  4. Live on-campus while students are on-campus.
  5. Previous work experience in TRIO (Upward Bound, ETS, SSS, etc.), residence life, student activities, supervision/mentoring skills or similar preferred.
  6. Individuals with communication skills, counseling skills, and interest in social sciences or education preferred. 
Job Description: Resident Supervisors
  1. Responsible for the safety and security of UB students and staff in the residence halls.
  2. Supervise Resident Advisors and students, on campus and during trips, in addition to establishing rapport with those assigned to your residence hall (approximately 20 RAs & approximately 330 students).
  3. Actively participate in all activities.
  4. Plan and implement scheduled evening activities.
  5. Evaluate RAs job performance twice during the summer in addition to mentoring and addressing/correcting issues.
  6. Evaluate students' progress throughout the summer.
  7. Enforce residence hall and program rules consistently.
  8. Attend, participate during or lead Residence Hall Staff meetings.
  9. Report any serious infractions regarding drugs, alcohol, or sexual misconduct immediately to Administrative Staff.
  10. Accompany students to the health clinic, doctor, or emergency room as needed.
  11. Ensure that RAs complete all responsibilities including required duties throughout the day and after curfew.
  12. Work under the supervision of Administrative Staff.
  13. Complete all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner.
  14. Set the example for the UB Program with a positive attitude and excellent behavior.
  15. Other duties as assigned. 
Typical Day
A typical day for the Resident Supervisor begins around 6:30 a.m. and ends around 11:30 p.m. It is the responsibility of the RSs to make sure that the Resident Advisors are reporting to their assigned duties including patrols, cafeteria duty, office duty, academy duty, etc. 

The RSs will interact with all students in the residence halls, and they will be responsible for taking students to the health clinic or emergency room as needed. RSs will assist students and RAs with residence life issues and interact with visitors in the building. 

It is the responsibility of the RSs to plan, implement, and engage in all activities and trips. Although there is a "lights out" policy for the students at 11:00 p.m., the RSs are always on duty and need to be available at all times in case a situation or emergency arises. 

Pay and Time Off 
The Resident Supervisor pay is $4,200.00 (before taxes) for the time of employment. This will be divided among three pay periods of (June 14th, June 28th, and July 15th). All staff will have every weekend off beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday and will report back to duty at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. In addition, the Resident Supervisors will have one morning off (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) after the first week students are on campus. Please note that this is a very time consuming and exhausting job, but the lives you impact will be well worth your sleepless nights!

Immediately following your interview you will be required to complete an official MSU Application (this will be submitted to UB Offices not to Human Resources).
